If you already have a VPS at Contabo, then the problem is probably not the provider itself, but rather the server configuration. XenForo first needs a properly configured PHP/MySQL stack, and after that the installed add-ons should be checked as well.
If your forum is still currently running on shared hosting and you only use the VPS for other deployments, then I would recommend moving XenForo fully to the VPS. Shared hosting is usually not ideal for this kind of setup in the long run.
In general, the server should always be chosen based on the project. In other words, you do not need to start too big right away, it is usually better to begin with a solid small VPS and let the server grow along with the project as the forum gets bigger.
As for affordable VPS providers, Hetzner, Contabo, and Vultr are often mentioned. But if you already have a Contabo VPS, I would first try to get XenForo running properly there before switching to another provider.
If you want, you can also share your forum URL. That would make it easier to get a rough idea of what server size would make sense for your project and what kind of setup could be recommended.
